Hellgate: London – Exodus (Book 1) by Mel Odom
Posted on: April 21, 2011The Templar Knights been training for centuries to fight demons, should they appear in our world. Armed with extremely hi-tech weaponry coupled with occult powers, they are ever-vigilant, working to protect a society that doesn’t even know they exist. Simon Cross was raised a Templar, growing up in the London underground. He left the order after becoming jaded about the secrecy, wanting to see the world.
As luck would have it, not too long after Cross leaves is when he is needed most. Demons have successfully created a portal into our world and have come streaming through. All manner of nightmarish creatures take over London, killing and even consuming thousands of people.
It is up to the Templar Knights to save what is left of mankind.
This trilogy is based on a popular video game of the same name. I’m not much of a gamer so I couldn’t tell you if the game is any good or how the books compare. I can tell you this though — the first book is excellent! Your heart will race during the non-stop battles from start to finish. You’ll cringe at the devastation wrought by the wildly imaginative demons. You’ll find yourself wondering where exactly you might be able to pick up a suit of armor like the Templar use, or at least a Spike Bolter of your very own.
On one hand, we have Templar Knights fighting the demons tooth and nail. On the other hand, we have Cabalists trying to learn and gain power from the demons. In the middle, we have hundreds of innocents, just trying to survive in this new world.
Mel Odom has written dozens of books and he absolutely shines with action scenes. There is a fair amount of personal drama here too and Odom handles this quite well.
I really enjoyed the heck out of this book and am looking forward to the other two volumes in the trilogy. Highly recommended if you like your end of the world tales with heavy sci fi / fantasy sprinkles on top.
